Improve HMS and CAFS Results Without Burnout
Apr 22, 2026
If you’re heading into Term 2 feeling that familiar pressure building… you’re not alone.
Reports. Assessments. Parent teacher nights.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, you’re trying to make sure your students actually learn.
This week on The PDHPE and CAFS Podcast, I shared something that might feel uncomfortable at first.
I spent years focusing on things that didn’t make a difference.
Late nights. Weekends. Holidays.
Rewriting resources. Creating slides. Perfecting lessons.
And yet… student results didn’t shift the way I expected.
Here’s the truth.
It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing what works.
The Shift That Changes Everything
After years of teaching, marking HSC responses and working with teachers across NSW, the difference is clear.
The classrooms seeing Band 5 and 6 growth are not the ones doing the most.
They are the ones doing the right things consistently.
Think:
Clarity in teaching
Explicit instruction
Ongoing feedback
Application through real examples
Not endless note-taking.
Not copying from the board.
Not reinventing every resource.
The Biggest Mistake We’re Still Making
We are spending too much time on what happens before the lesson…
And not enough on what happens inside it.
Your delivery is where the impact is.
That moment where you hook your students in.
Where you bring the content to life.
Where they actually get it.
That’s the work that moves students from Band 4 to Band 5 and 6.
What This Looks Like in a CAFS Classroom
Instead of:
Copying notes on wellbeing…
Try:
Start with a real-world clip
Explicitly teach the concept
Apply it to a scenario
Transfer it to a different group
Then write using a structure like PEEL
That’s learning that sticks.
That’s learning that transfers.
What This Looks Like in HMS
Instead of just teaching training principles…
Get students to experience them.
Track their own training
Analyse their progress
Apply concepts like reversibility and overload
Reflect and write using exam-style responses
That’s where the understanding deepens.
The Framework Behind It
This is where the Empowered Teacher Pathway comes in.
Time
Energy
Wellbeing
If you are pouring all three into things that don’t impact learning, burnout is inevitable.
If you redirect them into high-impact teaching strategies, everything shifts.
For you.
And for your students.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
There are already resources, strategies and support available to help you do this.
You don’t need to recreate everything from scratch.
You just need to focus on what matters.
