Navigate the New K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE Syllabus with Clarity

May 20, 2026

If you’ve opened the new K-6 or 7-10 PDHPE syllabus and thought, “Where do I even start?” you are not alone.

Between curriculum reform, HMS changes, sport, wellbeing roles, reporting and everything else happening in schools, it is a lot.

This week on The PDHPE & CAFS Podcast, I was joined by our PDHPE mentors Lyndelle Batten and Tara Steinbeck to help NSW teachers kickstart their planning for the new K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabus.

And the big message?

You do not have to do this alone.

The new syllabus is a chance to reimagine PDHPE

The new K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabus gives us a chance to look at what is already working and make it stronger.

You do not need to throw everything out.

Instead, ask:

What still works?
What needs adjusting?
Where can we better connect health, movement, wellbeing and respectful relationships?

For NSW primary teachers, the focus on fundamental movement skills is a powerful reminder that students need explicit teaching to build confidence, coordination and lifelong movement habits.

For 7-10 PDHPE teachers, the syllabus creates opportunities to connect health, mental wellbeing, digital health, consent, respectful relationships, biomechanics and lifelong physical activity in more meaningful ways.

PE is not just sport

We are teaching students how to move, participate, cooperate, problem solve, make decisions and value lifelong physical activity.

That matters.

Especially for students who may not see themselves as “sporty” but still deserve to feel confident and capable in movement settings.

Integrated units can make PDHPE more meaningful

One of the best shifts we can make is moving away from the idea that PDHPE is split into “theory” and “prac”.

Health connects to movement.
Movement connects to wellbeing.
Relationships connect to decision making.
Digital health connects to safety and identity.

When students see PDHPE as one connected subject, they understand its relevance beyond the classroom.

That is where the impact happens.

You deserve support

There is no badge of honour for doing everything alone.

Other KLAs access programs, resources and support.

PDHPE deserves the same.

Whether you are a music teacher taking PDHPE for the first time, a K-6 RFF teacher, a high school PDHPE teacher or the only PE teacher in your school, you deserve resources that save time and reduce the pressure.
