Connect Health and Movement Science CI Topics to Year 12 Success
May 27, 2026
If your Year 11 Health and Movement Science students are choosing Collaborative Investigation topics that feel disconnected from the rest of the course, you are not alone.
The CI is compulsory. It is mandated at 20 hours of course time. So we need to make sure it actually supports student learning, not just ticks a box.
This week on The PDHPE and CAFS Podcast, we’re unpacking how to choose smarter Health and Movement Science CI topics that connect Year 11 to Year 12.
Because the CI should not feel random.
It should help students build research skills, understand the syllabus more deeply and prepare for the HSC.
The biggest mistake I’m seeing is students being given too much freedom too early. They choose a topic that sounds interesting, but it does not always sit clearly in the syllabus, generate useful data or connect to Year 12 content.
A strong CI topic should:
- Sit clearly inside the Year 11 HMS syllabus
- Allow students to collect useful primary or secondary data
- Link forward to Year 12 content
- Build skills in research, analysis and communication
- Support stronger HSC thinking
In the episode, I share 8 possible CI focus questions across Focus Area 1 and Focus Area 2, including topics linked to health behaviours, mental health, screen time, aerobic training, participation in sport, fitness testing and wearable technology.
Every decision we make in HMS needs to have a clear purpose. The CI is a perfect opportunity to connect Year 11 content with the skills students need for Year 12 and beyond.
