Transforming PDHPE with Agency, Joy and the 4Cs

Nov 26, 2025

This week on The PDHPE and CAFS Podcast, we’re diving into what real transformation looks like in NSW schools and why PDHPE is uniquely placed to lead it. Jamie Gerlach from 4C Transformative Learning joins me to unpack why capability building, teacher agency and deep learning matter more than ever.

If you’re feeling stretched thin by reform, constant change or the pressure to “get through” the content, you’re not alone. Teachers across NSW are navigating the biggest curriculum shift in decades and the exhaustion is real. But as Jamie reminds us, change doesn’t have to feel disempowering.

When we anchor our work in human flourishing, connection and the 4Cs creativity, critical reflection, communication and collaboration we create space for deep learning that actually sticks.

Teaching PDHPE Beyond the Content

One of Jamie’s biggest truths is that PDHPE isn’t just another subject. It’s a space where identity, wellbeing and human connection are shaped. When we zoom out from dot points and think big picture, we’re reminded that our classroom decisions genuinely influence how young people see themselves and the world around them.

Letting Go of the Tick the Box Mindset

Too many teachers feel like the syllabus is their boss. Jamie reframes this beautifully: the syllabus is a tool, not an authority figure. We can still meet NESA expectations while adapting the curriculum to the needs of our learners. That’s where frameworks like Understanding by Design, formative assessment and backwards mapping can help us work smarter, not harder.

The Power of the 4Cs

The 4Cs aren’t extras.
They’re essential capabilities that help students navigate a complex world. In PDHPE and HMS, they already appear in the skill outcomes, yet many teachers feel unsure about how to teach them. Jamie’s explanation is simple: break them down. Teach noticing. Teach questioning. Teach empathy and imaginative thinking. Layer learning so capability and content grow together.

Bringing Joy Back to Learning PDHPE

Jamie speaks powerfully about joy as a driver of learning. When learning feels meaningful, playful and connected, students remember it. And when teachers experience joy, everything shifts. Joy isn’t a nice to have. It’s essential for deep learning and teacher wellbeing.

Where to Next?

If you’re navigating HMS, PDHPE or upcoming CAFS changes, small, intentional shifts can open up big opportunities. You don’t need more hours. You need processes that honour your expertise and the needs of your students.
