Teach Netball Confidently in NSW Primary and PDHPE

May 06, 2026

If you’ve ever stood in front of a class thinking…
“I don’t even like netball… how am I meant to teach it?”

You’re not alone.

So many NSW primary and PDHPE teachers feel this way.

And here’s the truth…

You don’t need to love netball to teach it well.
You just need the right starting point.

This week on The PDHPE and CAFS Podcast, I sat down with Jade from Netball NSW to break it all down simply and practically.

Because netball isn’t just a sport.
It’s a powerful vehicle for movement, teamwork and confidence.

Why Netball Works in NSW Primary and PDHPE

Netball is one of the easiest ways to bring fundamental movement skills to life.

Think about it…

Running
Catching
Throwing
Stopping
Changing direction

Your students already know these.

We’re not teaching something completely new.
We’re refining what they can already do.

And that’s where the magic happens.

Start Simple (Really Simple)

You don’t need positions.
You don’t need full rules.
You don’t even need a court.

Start with this:

  • Bibs vs no bibs
    • Pass the ball down the court
    • Everyone touches the ball
    • Get it to a target

That’s it.

From there, you build.

This is where frameworks like IMPACT come in.
Introduce → Model → Practise → Apply → Check → Transfer.

Keep it simple. Build confidence first.

Build Teamwork Without Even Trying

Here’s what makes netball different.

There are no “showy” players.

Every student has to be involved.

They must pass.
They must communicate.
They must work together.

And for many students… that’s where confidence grows.

Especially for those who don’t usually put their hand up in class.

A Game You Can Use Tomorrow

Try this:

Numbers Netball.

Give each student a number.
Call a number.
They run out, grab the ball and pass it to every teammate.

Then finish with a shot or target.

Done.

You’ve just covered:

  • Movement
    • Passing
    • Decision making
    • Teamwork

Without overthinking it.

It’s Not About Netball

Let’s be clear.

This isn’t about creating elite netballers.

It’s about:

  • Building movement confidence
    • Developing teamwork
    • Creating engagement
    • Giving students a win

Because when students feel successful in movement…

They’re more likely to keep showing up.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

If you’re still thinking…

“Yep… but I still don’t feel confident”

That’s exactly why partnerships matter.

There are coaches, programs and resources available to support you.

You don’t have to figure it all out yourself.

And honestly… you shouldn’t.
