How do we teach adoption in Community and Family Studies in a way that goes beyond the definition?
This week on The PDHPE & CAFS Podcast, I’m joined by Sarah Tompson, a NSW educator of almost 20 years who was born in Papua New Guinea and adopted by an Australian family at three weeks old.
Sarah was recently invited by a CAFS teacher to share her story with two Year 12 Community and Family Studies classes. It was such a great example of what can happen when we take our students beyond the textbook and give them an opportunity to hear directly from someone with lived experience.
We talk about adoption, sense of identity, belonging, culture and nature versus nurture. Sarah also shares some really practical advice for CAFS teachers about the way we approach family in the classroom, including the activities we choose and the language we use.
